Remodeling your kitchen can be a nightmare. From installing new appliances to finding just the perfect shade of off-white to brighten up the room, you are constantly in a swirl of decision making that seems to never cease. One of the easiest – and smallest – design elements in your kitchen, however, often remains unaddressed and therefore neglected in the kitchen remodel process. What is this decorative aspect? Cabinet hardware. Kitchen cabinet knobs and their accessories, while small, pack a powerful punch when it comes to creating a cohesive, polished, remodeled room in your home. Not sure how to choose the right hardware? Read on!

Assess the Situation

Before you go ahead and take a screw driver to your cabinet and shelve units, evaluate your current situation in combination with your additional kitchen remodel plans. Depending on your design elements, some of your current cabinet hardware might just work perfectly with that darker stain of cabinet or the lighter shade of granite on your counter tops. For many, however, they have not given their drawer hardware the least bit of attention and therefore, their plans certainly do not match their existing dummy knobs and drawer pulls. If you fall into the later category, do not despair, choosing and installing new cabinet accessories is simple.

Shop Around

Like any good shopper, you do not want to immediately buy the first drawer hardware set your eyes fall upon. Do your research and compare pricing, materials and sizing. Often, if you are replacing many drawer accessories simultaneously, you will be able to score a cheaper price by purchasing in bulk—this is usually available for online shoppers versus in-store purchasing. If you are not satisfied with the options you have found, ask around. Chances are that one of your friends, relatives or neighbors has replaced their own cabinet accessories and can steer you in a better direction or at least tell you what not to buy!

Select Your Style

While front and back doors often are accented with ornate, large door knobs, pulls and door knockers, your cabinets should quietly accent your cabinets, countertops and appliances. Certainly, choosing a design is up to each individual owner, but keeping your decorations simply is often your best option. While door knockers certainly make a statement and are your home’s first impression, intricate engravings and designs on your kitchen accessories may be lost amidst the other larger components of your kitchen.

Mix and Match Materials

If you had your heart set on a rather decorative set of cabinet pulls, perhaps you might be satisfied instead with mixing and matching a variety of materials that can certainly help kick up your design efforts a notch or two. One unique way to mix and match is to create a layered look. Starting at the lower level of cabinet units, install the darkest material of your choosing. Next, beginning with the next tier of cabinet units, install a medium colored material. Finally, use your lightest colored material to install at the top, closest to the ceiling. The layered look will create a fresh, interesting design that is totally unique to your home!

Recycle the Old

Last but not least, when it comes to remodeling, trash seems to amass no matter what aspect you are redecorating, no matter how small. That is why recycling your ‘used’ parts is a great solution. Who knows? Your ‘old’ cabinet pulls might just be the very material and finish a neighbor down the block was looking for. Offer your goods in a yard sale, curb alert or on a free posting online on sites such as craigslist.org or freecylce.com. Not only are you helping others, you are also creating less trash sent to your nearby landfill; consider your kitchen remodel doing your part to help save the environment!
